White River Place gets greener

Wed 8th April 2015

A major green initiative at White River Place Shopping Centre is seeing more than 300 solar panels installed to reduce energy use at the Centre.

The £175,000 project by White River Place’s owners Ellandi is transforming the Centre roof with a solar array of 320 panels capable of generating 80Kw - enough electricity to power lighting for its 550-space car park and other service areas.

The scheme is in addition to some of the other environmental measures already in place at White River Place which include a card baling and recycling initiative for the Centre and its retailers, the use of grey water recycling for flushing toilets, low energy lifts and recently installed induction lighting in the Centre’s service yard.

Richard Hutchinson, of Ellandi, said: “The potential for solar generation in Cornwall is well known and it made sense to put the extensive roof space we have here at White River Place to good use.

“It represents another significant investment for Ellandi into the Centre but will bring about long term benefits in the form of lower energy costs and a very worthwhile reduction in carbon emissions for the Centre.”

Work to install the solar panels started in early March and is expected to be completed by Easter with the work being carried out by Solinium Renewable Energy.
